Local Nassau County residents express their opinions on what fashion and style means for them and Long Island. At a recent fashion show held at Hofstra University, local designers gave insight on Long Island's fashion market and where they look forward to taking it. Shoppers, retail workers and the local designers of the fashion show all agree that it is time for Long Island to transition from just fashionable to stylish. (NNL Video by Amber Leon)

Thrift stores are among the few types of businesses that are actually thriving as a result of the recession. The allure of low prices for quality items is a perfect fit for economical shoppers. According to a study conducted by The Association of Resale Professionals (NARTS), 71.4 percent of thrift stores increased their total sales from 2008 to 2009.

Before December, Vanessa Lind, 20, of Massapequa, N.Y., would have described her grandfather as "super-human," and a "man of perfect health." Now she says "he looks like a question mark."
