The Garden City Trojans boys lacrosse team started out their 2010 campaign with a solid 10-5 victory over the Syosset Braves Wednesday. Starting the season on their home turf, Garden City took charge of the game, lost control, then came back swinging again.
Led by a dynamic duo in sophomore Devin Dwyer, who tallied five assists in the game, and junior Tom Gordon, Garden City came out hot to take a 3-1 first quarter lead. Garden City looked set to take the second quarter, too, when Dwyer hit senior Matt Montgomery 20 seconds into the period. With just over five minutes in the half, Garden City held a 5-2 lead.

Hempstead varsity softball was not prepared for the Elmont batters on Saturday in their pre-season game. The Hempstead Tigers fell to the Elmont Spartans 30-4 after five innings of a consistent defensive struggle.

Hills West's Tobias Harris, Tavon Sledge, and Uniondale coach Tom Diana react to the game (NNL Video by Chari Bayanker) HEMPSTEAD -- The Uniondale boys basketball team knew that they were heavy underdogs coming into the Long Island championship game against Suffolk County champion Half Hollow Hills West. McDonald's All-American Tobias Harris and junior Tavon Sledge each scored 19 points to lead Hills West to a 63-50 victory in front of a near sellout crowd at Hofstra's Mack Sports Complex. Uniondale was led by sophomore Shaq Mosley, who had 17 points, including 14 in the second half while senior Bolade Akingboye added 16 points. |

(NNL Video by Chari Bayanker) HEMPSTEAD - The Uniondale boys basketball team was staring at a slim deficit going into halftime. After dominating the second half, pushing their lead to double digits, the Knights held off a late rally by the Baldwin Bruins to win the Nassau County Class AA championship 64-61 Saturday night. Baldwin had a chance to send the game to overtime, but senior Ashanti DePass' 3-point attempt rolled in and out. |
